Selling on Coupang starts with a routing decision, and only part of it belongs to you. Three routes take an application. Two of them, Marketplace and Rocket Growth, put you on the platform as the seller. The third makes you a wholesale supplier, and Coupang decides whether to buy. Each carries a different fee structure, settlement clock, set of legal duties, and degree of control over your retail price.

This sits at the commerce layer of the complete guide to digital marketing in Korea. Whether Coupang or Naver should carry your launch at all is worked through in the guide to Korean ecommerce platforms, and this post assumes that question is settled and Coupang won. Rates and rules are as published on Coupang’s seller surfaces in September 2026.

Which Coupang Seller Route Are You Actually Joining?

Three routes exist, they are three different businesses, and all three take an application.

Marketplace is the open-market route. You list, you hold the Korean mail order sales filing, you ship, you answer customer contacts, and you pay a category sales commission. Rocket Growth keeps you as the seller but moves the goods into Coupang’s fulfillment centers, where Coupang picks, packs, ships, handles customer service and processes returns, charging per-unit logistics fees on top of the same commission. Coupang’s Rocket Growth page states that settlement runs exactly as it does on Marketplace, with the sales commission, additional costs such as advertising, and the Rocket Growth service fees deducted before payment. Retail supply, Coupang’s direct-purchase business, makes Coupang the owner of the stock and the setter of the retail price, and makes you a supplier negotiating margin and rebates.

The third route differs in what the application buys you. Coupang’s seller FAQ describes retail supply as the arrangement where a seller delivers goods to Coupang, which then runs sales management, delivery and customer service itself, and states that its system, Supplier Hub, is separate from Wing. Coupang publishes a Rocket Delivery onboarding application and a procedure guide on that Supplier Hub site, so you can initiate the approach yourself. What Coupang controls is the decision that follows: whether it buys at all, which of your products it takes, the supply price it accepts, and the retail price it then sets. The Fair Trade Commission’s 2024 decision records that on directly purchased goods Coupang carries the stock, the sales responsibility and the pricing authority. A brand arriving in Korea usually enters on Marketplace or Rocket Growth and earns the supply conversation with sell-through.

The scale behind the decision is real. Coupang reported 24.7 million Product Commerce active customers in the second quarter of 2026, up 3 percent year on year, on total net revenues of 8.9 billion dollars, per its earnings release of 4 August 2026.

The routes are governed differently, which is the part that surprises finance teams later. A supplier in the direct-purchase business sits inside Korea’s Act on Fair Transactions in Large Retail Business. A Marketplace seller sits outside it and lives on Coupang’s own settlement policy.

Do You Need a Korean Business Registration to Sell on Coupang?

For the domestic routes, yes. Coupang’s seller FAQ states that once you have a business registration number you can begin quickly, and that you submit a business registration certificate, a mail order sales filing certificate and a copy of the representative’s bank passbook to complete business verification. The purchase safety service confirmation that the mail order filing itself requires is downloadable inside Coupang Wing after verification, per Coupang’s seller preparation guide.

Who holds that filing decides who carries the liability. Article 12 of the Act on Consumer Protection in Electronic Commerce places the filing duty on the mail order seller, meaning the party contracting with the consumer. Put a Korean distributor in that position and the filing, the consumer duties, the account history and the reviews accrue to them, with the consequences for store grade and review history set out in the Naver Shopping guide for foreign brands.

Coupang does run a separate global seller program for companies shipping from overseas, with its own English seller site and support address. That English seller site returned an access gate when checked in September 2026, so treat any second-hand figure for that route as unconfirmed and get the commission band, the fee lines and the settlement currency in writing before you model it.

What Coupang does publish about cross-border selling is the enforcement side, and it is specific. Coupang’s seller management policy, dated 2 August 2025, monitors listings registered for domestic delivery that show overseas shipping history, and listings that ask the customer separately for a personal customs clearance code. Running an overseas-shipped listing as though it were domestic is a policy violation with exposure consequences.

What Does Selling on Coupang Cost, Line by Line?

Coupang’s Korean seller FAQ answers the fee question for the domestic Marketplace route in a single line: Marketplace charges no fee besides the sales commission. Coupang’s own seller information center contradicts that line. The information center states that where monthly sales excluding shipping reach 1 million won, a service charge of 55,000 won including VAT is billed once a month, and that nothing is charged below that threshold. Put it in the model before you launch, because it is fixed in won and does not scale with your sales: at exactly 1 million won of monthly sales it is 5.5 percent stacked on a commission band of 4 to 10.9 percent, and its weight falls as volume rises, so it bites hardest on the low-volume launch this post tells you to avoid. Five lines therefore sit outside the sales commission: that monthly service charge, advertising, Rocket Growth per-unit logistics, the return shipping you register on seller-shipped orders, and the Seller Wallet financing fee. A percentage processing charge on shipping fees also circulates for the cross-border global seller route, and no Coupang surface reachable in September 2026 carried it, so treat that one as unconfirmed until Coupang states it to you directly.

Coupang has publicly put its maximum category rate at 10.9 percent, per a Newstomato factcheck published in January 2024. Coupang’s own published category table, dated 25 November 2019, runs from 4 percent on gold bars to 10.9 percent on noodles and ramen. That table states no VAT basis in either direction, so confirm on your own account whether your rate applies to a VAT-inclusive or a VAT-exclusive amount; the answer moves a margin model by a tenth. Treat a table dated 2019 as evidence of the band, and your category’s current rate as a separate question. The same table warns that a category cannot be changed once a product is registered, that Coupang may move a product into the category it belongs in, and that the changed category’s commission rate then applies, which makes listing taxonomy a pricing decision.

Rocket Growth presupposes something Coupang does not do for you. Stock has to be inside Korea and customs-cleared before it can be inbounded to a Coupang center. Article 241(1) of the Customs Act requires anyone importing goods to declare them to the head of the customs office, and Article 19(1) makes the owner of the goods at the time of that import declaration the party liable for the duty. Coupang’s product registration guide requires an import declaration certificate to be attached when a parallel-imported product is listed. Somebody on the Korean side is therefore importer of record before a single unit reaches a fulfillment center: your Korean entity, your distributor, or a specialist provider. Whoever files that declaration is the party Korean customs holds answerable for the duty and the import VAT, and the name on it is not a clerical detail you can swap later. A distributor acting as your importer accumulates the clearance history, the certification records and the customs relationship in its own name, so replacing that distributor means a successor rebuilds all three before your next shipment clears, with your stock waiting while it happens. Settle it as a term of the distribution agreement, before the first container moves. The sequencing sits in the guide to exporting to Korea.

Rocket Growth then adds per-unit logistics. Coupang’s Rocket Growth cost page, current in September 2026, publishes six size tiers with inbound and outbound handling floors from 600 won for extra small to 1,375 won for the three largest tiers, and shipping floors from 1,350 won for extra small to 5,600 won for oversized. Every published figure is a minimum rather than a cap. Coupang prints each one with a trailing tilde and states that the final cost is set by category, size type and the final selling price after seller coupons. Storage is free for 30 days from each inbound, extended to 45 days for clothing, shoes and accessories under the current promotion. Return collection, return restocking and removal each carry 20 free units a month under promotion, and the Rocket Growth Saver tier removes the return collection and restocking charges and extends free storage to 60 days.

Two things follow. First, unit price drives the arithmetic, so the number worth having is your own break-even. Write it out: selling price, minus landed cost, minus your commission rate times the final price the customer actually pays, minus handling and shipping per unit, minus your expected return rate times the cost of handling one return, minus your monthly advertising spend and the 55,000 won service charge divided by the units you expect to sell that month, measured against your target gross margin. Solve for the price at which that still clears. Coupang’s fee table states that commission is charged on the discounted price the customer actually pays, so run the commission term on the post-coupon figure, and because that table states no VAT basis, confirm on your own account whether the amount it applies to is VAT inclusive before the rate goes into a model. At the extra small floors the fixed fulfillment charge alone is 1,950 won a unit before any commission, and that fixed charge is what breaks low unit prices. Run your own commission rate and return experience through it, then take the Coupang against Naver loaded-rate comparison from the Korean ecommerce platforms guide. Second, several of those lines are promotional. Coupang states it will give advance notice if the free and discounted promotions change, which is another way of saying the rate card you model in year one is not guaranteed to be the one you renew on.

When Does Coupang Pay, and What Does the Delay Cost?

Coupang settles on purchase confirmation, and you choose the cycle. Coupang’s seller FAQ states that where the customer never presses purchase confirmation, the order is confirmed automatically seven days after delivery is completed, so seven days past delivery is the practical start of the clock. Under weekly settlement, Coupang’s seller guide states that 70 percent of the settlement amount is paid weekly and the remaining 30 percent is held against refunds and released monthly. Under monthly settlement, 100 percent is paid 15 business days after the last day of the month. Rocket Growth settles the same way with fulfillment and advertising costs deducted first.

That cycle is where the working capital requirement comes from, and the wait swings by weeks depending on where in the month delivery lands. The cutoff is that delivery has to complete at least seven days before the month closes for the order to reach that month’s run. On monthly settlement, an order delivered on the 1st confirms on the 8th, waits out the rest of the month, then waits 15 business days, which is about three calendar weeks, so the money lands about seven weeks after delivery. An order delivered on the 23rd of a 30 day month confirms on the 30th, catches the same run, and waits about four weeks. An order delivered on the 24th confirms in the following month, joins the following month’s run, and waits about eight weeks, longer when Seollal or Chuseok sits inside the window. Fund against the top of that range. Weekly settlement compresses the cycle and holds 30 percent back until the monthly run. At its widest the settlement gap is about two months of cost of goods. Your production and inbound lead time and the stock dwelling in a Coupang center before it sells sit in front of that gap, and this post does not size them for you, so treat the common two to three month funding figure as the settlement gap plus a lead time your own supply chain has to supply.

Coupang sells the cure for that gap as a product. Seller Wallet fast settlement pays 90 percent of the settlement amount the next day, with the remaining 10 percent following on the original date. Coupang’s own page describes it as a factoring arrangement with Hana Bank, which takes the fee, and puts the fee at about 0.3 percent over 30 days, a minimum annualized 3.698 percent built from a 3.08 percent Hana Bank base rate plus a 0.618 percent spread as of 20 August 2025. That is a financing cost against your gross margin, and it deserves a line in the model rather than a footnote.

The statutory protection that gets quoted at foreign brands does not reach the marketplace seller. Article 8(2) of the Act on Fair Transactions in Large Retail Business requires a large retailer to pay a supplier within 60 days of receiving the goods in a direct-purchase transaction, with interest on any overrun under Article 8(3). That provision binds the retail-supply relationship. A Marketplace or Rocket Growth seller supplies nothing to Coupang and falls outside it, so your payout timing comes from Coupang’s settlement policy and your contract.

Korea’s regulator has now tested that rule, on the supply side. The Fair Trade Commission announced on 26 February 2026 that it had fined Coupang 2.185 billion won, finding among other conduct that between 21 October 2021 and 30 June 2024 Coupang paid roughly 280 billion won owed to 25,715 suppliers between one and 233 days past the 60-day deadline, and left about 853 million won of late interest unpaid. The regulator called it the first sanction for breaching the statutory deadline since the provision entered the Act in 2021. Read it as evidence about counterparty behavior at the top of the chain, and keep it away from your own payout date, which the settlement cycle above already sets.

What Do Returns and Customer Service Commit You To?

Korean law gives the consumer a withdrawal right, and Coupang’s policies add operational duties on top.

Article 17(1) of the Act on Consumer Protection in Electronic Commerce gives a consumer seven days to withdraw from an online purchase, running from delivery where the goods arrive after the contract document, with narrow exceptions in Article 17(2) for goods destroyed or damaged by the consumer, value materially reduced through use or the passage of time, opened copyable media and commenced services. That duty attaches to the mail order seller, which is you whenever you are the seller of record.

Coupang’s seller management policy of 2 August 2025 adds the service standard. Repeatedly failing to answer a customer center inquiry within 24 hours, or answering after 24 hours, is a monitored violation, as are meaningless one-word answers, registering shipping or return fees that are excessive against ordinary courier rates, and showing cost information on the product page that differs from what the customer was told. On Marketplace you also register the return address and the round-trip shipping fee, being the initial delivery charge plus the return charge, which Coupang’s guide states is billed to the customer when the return is for customer reasons. Rocket Growth moves this work to Coupang and reprices it as per-event fees.

What Has to Be Certified Before You Can List?

Certification moves launch dates, and it is category-specific at the listing screen. Coupang’s product registration guide states that required documents differ by category, that mandatory documents must be uploaded, and that the duty to classify the category correctly and comply with the relevant law rests with the seller, along with the losses and legal liability arising from incorrect classification.

The name on the certificate matters more than the certificate. Under the Electrical Appliances and Consumer Products Safety Control Act, the duty to obtain safety certification under Article 5(1), to file safety confirmation under Article 15(1), or to carry out supplier conformity confirmation under Article 23(1) falls on the manufacturer, expressly including a foreign manufacturer exporting to Korea, or on the importer. Whoever imports your goods holds the certification in their own name. That is the same party that holds importer of record above, so settle both questions at once: if it is a Korean distributor you may later replace, plan for the successor to certify in its own right before you sign anything exclusive.

How Much Pricing Control Do You Give Up?

More than most brands expect, and Coupang documents the mechanism openly.

Coupang’s seller information center describes automatic seller price adjustment: switching it on makes your current selling price the ceiling, you set a minimum below which the price will not fall, and the system monitors the market around the clock to take or hold the Item Winner position. Item Winner is the mechanic underneath that. Coupang matches every seller of the same product onto a single listing. Coupang’s seller question and answer page of 28 July 2026 calls this item matching, describes it as Coupang’s basic product operating method, and states that it proceeds whether or not you enter product identifiers. Identifiers are a separate and now mandatory requirement: Coupang announced on 19 May 2026, per Etnews of that date, that from 1 June 2026 a missing or inaccurate barcode or model number risks registration failure or restricted exposure, with a grace period through 31 May, the stated aim being to consolidate identical products onto one page. One seller holds the buy position on that listing and the rest sit behind it, which is why Wing carries a price management tab for products where you are not the Item Winner. What that does to pricing and creative control is worked through in the guide to Korean ecommerce platforms.

Coupang frames the price floor as protecting your pricing authority, which is accurate and also the whole point. The floor is the only number in that feature you actually control, so set it against landed cost, commission, fulfillment and expected returns before enabling anything.

The shelf itself has been found to be managed. In decision 2024-284 of 5 August 2024, the Fair Trade Commission ordered Coupang and its subsidiary CPLB to stop fixing direct-purchase and private-brand products at the top of search rankings and to stop having employees write reviews on those products, and imposed a fine of 162.8 billion won on Coupang. Coupang has challenged the decision in the Seoul High Court, which in October 2024 suspended the corrective order until 30 days after judgment while leaving the fine payable, and no judgment had issued as of September 2026. For a foreign brand the practical inference is narrow: organic placement is a contested surface, so treat paid placement and your own price floor as the levers you can actually govern.

Where to Start, and When to Walk Away

Establish which route you positively qualify for before you pick one. A Korean entity plus a Korean bank account qualifies you for Marketplace as the seller of record. A distributor that holds the mail order sales filing instead qualifies your goods for Marketplace with that distributor as the seller, which is a different transaction: as set out above, the filing, the consumer duties, the account history and the reviews then accrue to them rather than to you, so weigh that cost before you treat the two as equivalent. Marketplace plus stock already customs-cleared into Korea in a Korean importer’s name, plus a unit price that clears the fulfillment floors with margin left, qualifies you for Rocket Growth. Retail supply takes an application through Supplier Hub, and qualifying on it means a Korean business entity, a supply price that survives Coupang’s margin expectation, and a category buyer who agrees to purchase. Goods that ship from overseas on each order belong on the cross-border route, and running them as a domestic listing is the violation Coupang’s 2 August 2025 policy names.

Then work in this order. Decide who the seller of record will be, because the mail order filing, the consumer duties and the review history follow that decision. Read your band off Coupang’s published category fee table, confirm the rate actually applied to your listings in your Wing settlement detail, and get that rate and its VAT basis confirmed in your contract or in writing from your account manager. Model fulfillment per unit at your real selling price rather than as a percentage. Fund the settlement gap, or price the fast-settlement financing into gross margin. Put the certification and the importer of record in the name of the party you intend to keep. Set your price floor before you enable automatic adjustment.

The clean disqualification is worth stating. If your product is cheap and light, so that at least 1,950 won of fulfillment plus commission plus return handling consumes the margin, Rocket Growth will not work at your price point. If you cannot fund two to three months of cost of goods and the financing cost exceeds net margin, the cash cycle will fail before the channel does. If you cannot answer Korean-language customer contacts inside 24 hours, the seller score will erode the exposure you are paying for. Any of those, and the right first move is a Naver-first launch or a distributor arrangement, with Coupang sequenced after the economics and the operating capability exist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a foreign company sell on Coupang without a Korean business registration? Not on the domestic routes. Coupang’s seller FAQ requires a business registration number, and asks for a business registration certificate, a mail order sales filing certificate and a copy of the representative’s bank passbook at verification. Coupang operates a separate program for sellers shipping from overseas, whose English seller site returned an access gate when checked in September 2026, so confirm its commission and settlement terms with Coupang directly before relying on any figure.

How much commission does Coupang charge a marketplace seller? Commission is set by product category. Coupang’s published category table, dated 25 November 2019, runs from 4 percent to 10.9 percent, and Coupang has described its maximum rate as 10.9 percent, per a Newstomato factcheck in January 2024. The table states no VAT basis. Coupang’s seller information center adds a service charge of 55,000 won including VAT, billed monthly once sales excluding shipping reach 1 million won.

How long does Coupang take to pay a seller? The clock starts at purchase confirmation, which Coupang’s seller FAQ says happens automatically seven days after delivery is completed if the customer does not confirm. Weekly settlement then pays 70 percent of the settlement amount, holding 30 percent against refunds for monthly release. Monthly settlement pays 100 percent 15 business days after the last day of the month. Seller Wallet sells next-day settlement of 90 percent as a Hana Bank factoring product.

Does Korea’s 60-day payment rule protect Coupang marketplace sellers? No. Article 8(2) of the Act on Fair Transactions in Large Retail Business requires payment within 60 days of goods being received in a direct-purchase transaction, which binds Coupang toward suppliers whose stock it buys. A Marketplace or Rocket Growth seller supplies nothing to Coupang and sits outside that provision, relying instead on Coupang’s published settlement policy and the contract signed at onboarding.

Where to Take This Next

Coupang rewards operators who model the loaded cost at their own unit price and treat settlement timing as a funding decision before launch. Inquivix runs Korean marketplace and digital growth programs for international brands from Seoul, covering channel strategy, listing and content operations, review programs and the paid media that makes either marketplace work.
