KakaoTalk Gift is a curated commerce surface inside Korea’s dominant messenger, and a foreign brand reaches it through a Korean selling entity. Kakao’s merchandising team reviews listing proposals, splits products into shipped goods and exchange vouchers, and prices each track separately. The decision belongs to distribution planning, with its own entity rule, margin structure, cash cycle, and multi-year redemption liability.
The full platform map sits in the Kakao marketing guide for foreign brands. This post covers who can list, which product form to choose, and what fees, settlement, and refund rules do to margin.
Data current as of September 2026.
Who Can Actually List on KakaoTalk Gift?
The seller of record has to be a Korean business, and the listing goes through a review Kakao controls.
Kakao runs two commerce doors. KakaoTalk Store is the self-serve one, and its seller documentation limits registration to domestic businesses holding business registration and, absent a 간이과세자 or under-50-transaction exemption, mail-order registration (통신판매업 신고), excluding overseas sellers (Kakao Business seller guide, 2026).
KakaoTalk Gift sits on a separate track. A brand submits a 제휴 제안 proposal, Kakao emails a decision within 15 days of submission, and selected sellers move through negotiation, contract, and channel listing; an application filed in the seller center without a proposal behind it never enters review (Kakao Commerce customer center, help articles 1073207522 and 1073206035). Health supplements, medical devices, traditional liquor, and purchase-agent cosmetics and imported foods clear a separate category authorization (Kakao Business seller guide, 2026).
Two structures work from outside Korea. Your own subsidiary or branch holds the registrations and owns the storefront, the pricing, and the customer. A Korean distributor listing your brand inside its own account stands up faster and costs margin and control, since the storefront, the data, and the merchandiser relationship sit with it. The wider choice sits in the Korea market entry modes guide.
Kakao’s overseas business registration by D-U-N-S Number, live June 24, 2026 (Kakao Developers notice, June 2026), lets a foreign company verify a Channel and open an ad account without a Korean business registration number, covered in the digital marketing in Korea guide. The commerce listing still runs on the domestic seller rule: the Gift contract is signed with a 사업자 범용 공동인증서 issued against the logged-in Korean business number, which no foreign parent can obtain (Kakao Commerce customer center, help article 1073207597).
Should You Sell an Exchange Voucher or a Shipped Product?
The two product forms set your operating burden, your cancellation rate, and the date you get paid.
Shipped goods (배송 상품) break a standard ecommerce assumption. The buyer pays, the recipient receives the gift in chat, then enters the delivery address. Nothing reaches your queue until then: the order sits at status 202, delivery requested, and preparation starts when the address arrives (Kakao Gift seller center manual, shipped goods sales management, December 2025; Kakao Commerce customer center, help article 1073207215). The recipient has eight days from the day the gift arrives, and the window cannot be extended. An address that never arrives cancels the order and refunds the sender through the original payment instrument, and the recipient can also reject the gift outright while the order sits at 배송요청 (Kakao Commerce customer center, help articles 1073207198, 1073207217, 1073208611, and 1073208752). A shipped listing therefore carries a structural cancellation rate that belongs in the forecast, on top of Korean fulfilment, a returns address, and Korean-language service.
Exchange vouchers (교환권) are redeemed at an online or offline point, with no parcel, no address, and no returns logistics. The requirement moves to a Korean redemption network and a point-of-sale process that validates each redemption.
Settle who the issuer of record is before pricing one. Korea’s standard terms for new-type gift certificates place final responsibility for the holder’s rights on the issuer, covering validity extensions, expiry notices, and refunds (Korea Fair Trade Commission, 2015, revised September 2025). They are a recommended form that binds through the terms an issuer adopts and through Korean ecommerce law. A foreign brand without Korean retail almost always runs the 교환권 through a Korean franchise or distribution partner, which makes that partner the issuer and puts the liability on its books.
Then settlement. Kakao settles against 구매확정, the buyer’s purchase confirmation, and dispatch triggers nothing. Buyers who never confirm are confirmed automatically eight days after delivery completes, and each non-delivery report pushes that out another ten days (Kakao Gift seller center manual, shipped goods sales management, December 2025). Confirmation only makes the order eligible for the next settlement close, set with your merchandiser at once or twice a month: confirming on the 1st, or the 1st and 16th, and paying on the 10th, or the 10th and 25th (Kakao Commerce customer center, help articles 1073206087 and 1073207525). An order paid September 1 and auto-confirmed on the 14th pays October 10 on the monthly cycle, or September 25 on the twice-monthly one, so negotiate the cycle alongside the rate.
What Does a KakaoTalk Gift Listing Cost in Margin?
Kakao publishes no commission schedule for Gift, so the rate arrives through negotiation and varies by category and trading terms (Kakao Commerce customer center, help article 1073207596).
The reported ceiling is the only public anchor: Korean business press puts the commission on listed merchants at a maximum in the 10 percent range (EBN, 2025), with payment processing alongside. Kakao’s voucher commission cut is scoped to mobile gift certificates from franchise brands and small merchants (Kakao, December 2024), so quoting its rates in a shipped-goods negotiation argues from the wrong rate card.
Above the rate sits the purchase type. Registration fixes each listing as 위탁수수료 consignment commission, 중개수수료 brokerage commission, or 직매입 direct purchase, where Kakao buys the inventory and the channel commission displays as 100 percent. The last two need MD agreement and a separate contract, and the type cannot be changed after approval (Kakao Gift seller center manual, product management, January 2026). Whether Kakao is your consignee, your broker, or your buyer sets your working capital and inventory risk before the rate does.
If your structure is a Korean subsidiary, price both doors. KakaoTalk Store charges a 기본수수료 basic commission containing the payment fee plus a 노출수수료 exposure commission, with 톡딜 priced separately, and Gift settlement statements itemise the same two lines (Kakao Business Talk Store guide, 2026; Kakao Gift seller center settlement manual, February 2024).
The base matters as much as the rate. Kakao calculates commission on 정산기준금액, the selling price less your own instant discount, and the Fair Trade Commission’s July 2025 consent decree guarantees a choice of shipping type, with the paid option charged on the product price alone (Kakao Gift seller center manual, product management, January 2026; Byline Network, July 21, 2025). Negotiate on the separated basis.

The one paid surface inside the channel is Kakao Gift Home CPT, a guaranteed reach product sold as fixed one-hour slots, twelve a day between 09:00 and 21:00, with no targeting and a published rate card: 1,200,000 to 1,500,000 KRW per slot and 1,700,000 to 2,000,000 KRW in peak season, deducted from the ad account’s ad cash on contract and consumed daily (Kakao Business Kakao Moment guide, 2026).
Merchandising costs more. A Kakao instant discount can only be set inside a sales promotion event agreed with your merchandiser, registered through a dated price reservation and promotion contract, with an event commission rate replacing your standing rate (Kakao Gift seller center manual, product management, January 2026). It is funded out of your margin, and terms close weeks ahead of the peak.
Your own audience is the third lever. A Channel broadcast bills 15 KRW per message to the friend list, or 20 KRW when narrowed by group, gender, or age (Kakao Business Channel guide, 2026), and building that base is its own cost line.
How Do Expiry and Refund Rules Change the Numbers?
Korean law gives voucher buyers a cash refund path long after the printed expiry date, which removes breakage from the business case.
An unused voucher refunds in cash at 90 percent of value for five years from purchase, even after the stated validity ends (Munhwa Ilbo, June 2026; Kakao Commerce customer center, help article 1073207269). The Korea Fair Trade Commission’s September 16, 2025 revision of the standard terms raised that to 95 percent above 50,000 KRW and to 100 percent where the holder takes the balance as points (Korea Fair Trade Commission, September 2025). Kakao adopted the revised tiers on August 1, 2026, and its 100 percent point route covers vouchers received since September 1, 2023, for Korean-national accounts within seven days of expiry (Seoul Economic TV, June 2026; Kakao Commerce customer center, help article 1073207271).
So model expiry income at zero, price today for a cost of goods you may deliver five years out, and expect Korean users to extend validity in-app as routine: one year, 367 days, at issue, then three-month extensions from 30 days before expiry, capped at five years and closed to discounted and promotional vouchers (Kakao Commerce customer center, help articles 1073207268 and 1073207267). Whichever party signed as issuer absorbs all three.
How Does the Korean Gifting Calendar Set the Plan?
Demand concentrates into a short list of dates, and the lead time is longer than any single peak.
Talk Gift recorded its largest monthly transaction value ever in May 2026, during Kakao’s family month promotion (Money Today, August 11, 2026; Kakao, May 2026). May carries Children’s Day, Parents’ Day, and Teachers’ Day, and Chuseok, Lunar New Year, Pepero Day, Valentine’s Day, and White Day fill the rest of the calendar mapped in the guide to Korean business holidays and planning cycles.
Kakao publishes its peak windows a quarter ahead and prices its only paid Gift surface off them: its third-quarter 2026 peak periods run July 13 to 15 and September 14 to 27 (Kakao Business Kakao Moment guide, 2026).
Work backward from your peak, and count the carriers. Korean parcel networks run at capacity before the major holidays, and the operators publish intake cutoffs and suspend pickup: the most recent industry-wide stoppage ran August 14 to 15, 2026, with CJ Logistics closing fresh-goods intake from the 13th (Financial News, August 11, 2026). A carrier’s intake cutoff runs days ahead of a stoppage, and your own dispatch cutoff runs ahead of that again. Review, category authorization, Korean product data, fulfilment setup, a merchandising slot, and a carrier cutoff do not compress into the month before Chuseok, so a quarter of lead time is the minimum. A listing also goes dark the moment its 입점 contract lapses (Kakao Gift seller center manual, product management, January 2026).
Is KakaoTalk Gift Right for Your Category?
Four questions settle it, and a brand that fails two should spend the money elsewhere.
Does the product read as a gift or as a credible self-purchase? Self-purchases were around 20 percent of Talk Gift transaction value in the second quarter of 2026, growing 39 percent year over year against 9 percent for total Gift value (Kakao Q2 2026 earnings call, August 2026). That gap makes a high-ticket listing viable: a 300,000 KRW appliance works poorly as a casual gift and well as a self-purchase.
Can you fulfil or redeem inside Korea? A shipped listing without Korean 3PL fails on service metrics, and a voucher listing without redemption points has nothing to redeem against.
Can you clear the visibility bar? Kakao listed roughly 8,700 brands and more than 640,000 product types across 2025 (Kakao, December 2025). A listing with no merchandising support and no owned traffic sits unseen in that inventory.
Does the channel add something your other Korean commerce does not? Registration ties each Gift product to a model record carrying a price range, and merchandisers hold Gift pricing against what it sells for elsewhere in Korea (Kakao Gift seller center manual, product management, January 2026; Kakao Commerce customer center, help article 1073207595), so a brand already trading on Coupang or Naver Shopping cannot list higher here and expect placement, a constraint set out in the guide to Korean ecommerce on Coupang and Naver Shopping. What Gift adds is social distribution: your brand arrives in a private chat from someone the recipient knows.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a company without a Korean entity sell on KakaoTalk Gift?
Not as the seller of record. Kakao’s seller documentation limits registration to domestic businesses and excludes overseas sellers (Kakao Business seller guide, 2026). A foreign brand lists through its own Korean subsidiary or branch, or through a Korean distributor. The June 2026 D-U-N-S Number route reaches the marketing layer only.
When does Kakao pay a KakaoTalk Gift seller?
Kakao settles on purchase confirmation, not dispatch. An unconfirmed order confirms automatically eight days after delivery completes, or 21 days after dispatch when tracking fails (Kakao Commerce customer center, help article 1073206088). Payment then waits for the next settlement close, so budget five to six weeks from the buyer’s payment on a monthly cycle and about three and a half on a twice-monthly one.
What happens to vouchers that are never redeemed?
The buyer can claim a refund years later. Unused vouchers refund at 90 percent of value within five years of purchase (Munhwa Ilbo, June 2026). The Korea Fair Trade Commission’s September 2025 revision lifted that to 95 percent above 50,000 KRW and 100 percent when the balance is taken as points, adopted by Kakao on August 1, 2026 (Seoul Economic TV, June 2026). Model expiry income at zero.
Where KakaoTalk Gift Fits in a Korea Commerce Plan
KakaoTalk Gift earns its place when a brand has a Korean selling entity or a distributor willing to list, a route to fulfil or redeem inside Korea, and a product that survives the gifting and self-purchase test. The entity rule, the purchase type, the cash cycle, and the five-year redemption liability decide the timeline and the margin.
