So, why is data so important for marketing?

Data In Marketing - What You Need To Know About It

Why Is Data Crucial For Marketing?

Why Is Data Crucial For Marketing?

Data is a monumental asset, provided you use it correctly. Digital marketers like myself are constantly trying to put both our business and other client companies into the spotlight so that both of us can reach our target audience. In that context, the clients of digital marketing companies differ, while the customers of our clients vary according to their niche. Can the same marketing efforts be used for both potential customers, then? Absolutely not!

This is where data comes into play. It is all the information about the different internet users browsing search engines for the site after site searching for answers to their queries. Marketers get a deeper understanding of their audiences – search intents, customer journeys, interests, dislikes, and much more information. This data can also be classified and sorted by demographics and other grouping methods to market your brand effectively, reaching out to customers in different phases of their customer journey and addressing their pain points.

Having an organized data management system also helps you analyze the effectiveness of your marketing campaigns and their impact on your overall brand, apart from just “creating” new campaigns with real-time data.

How Data In Marketing Shifted My Perspective

How Data In Marketing Shifted My Perspective

As someone who struggled with managing all my data in an organized manner, once I started gathering, storing, and analyzing in one dedicated location and getting my team to do the same with the help of a few SaaS tools – we collectively experienced a better overall understanding of our business and can effectively alternate the paths of our marketing strategies and plans when we notice possible hiccups or threats. With 76% of marketing leaders making their marketing decisions based on data analysis and my positive experience with leveraging the benefits of real-time data – I have no room to disagree!

Here’s how you can collect data and utilize it for better and more effective marketing.

Collection And Implementation Of Data In Marketing

There are a variety of data that are essential to marketing, with plenty of ways to collect them according to the type of data and where it is available. Data can be collected from third-party cookies to more transparent mediums like first-party data. Here’s a list of what these first, second, and third-party data collection looks like and how they can be used.

Purchase Data

Information collected about what customers buy and their behavior and response, including the influence of marketing strategies during their buying journey. A simple example would be records of a purchase made after a social media campaign.

Compiled Data

Information was gathered about popular trends in the industry, country, and around the scope of marketing.

Collected Data

Responses stored from customer surveys, website forms, and more which range from target demographics to interests or even simple contact details, are useful to communicate with and reach interested leads or target customers better.

Market Data

Market research findings of customer behavior, buying habits, preferred platforms, and more to evaluate and understand the market view of how your clients are perceived.

Captured Data

Information captured through search engines and other platforms about user behavior, for example, their number of types looking for a keyword, their bounce rates from tacky or unhelpful websites, impressions, and more.

Test Data

Results of tested marketing plans and strategies before going live.

User-Generated Content

Posts, comments, and other social actions taken by consumers on their websites, social media, and other platforms give you a better insight into your business.

Implementation

These gathered data can be analyzed and evaluated to produce and assist in understanding key performance indicators and marketing metrics for

  • Brand Awareness – Website visits, social media following, comments, etc
  • ROI – Lead generation quantity, marketing spend optimization, etc
  • Conversions – Cost per conversion, open rates, etc

Benefits of Data-Driven Marketing

Benefits of Data-Driven Marketing

I completely shifted to data-driven marketing without second thoughts because of its staggering impact, which led to a cycle of streamlining our workflow to reap excellent results – more customer acquisition rates, improved customer retention, a positive upward trend in business growth, and more. Below, I’ve identified the 3 main benefits of using data in marketing that lead the way to achieving this cycle of success.

Improved Customer Experience

Let’s be real here – your company has no success without its customers. With real-time data updated at a weekly rate at the least, marketers like me can easily address the pain points of consumers and identify and reach them at different phases of their purchasing journey while also connecting with them on their preferred platforms through marketing efforts they respond better to.

Better Investment Decisions

Knowing where customers are, which marketing strategies work best for them, and everything about the customer journey has helped me directly in all my investments into the right marketing platforms and tools. This helps manage your marketing budget without mindlessly paying for Facebook Ads if your consumers are using TikTok! Better marketing budget allocation allows you to invest more in other parts of your business as well as fully utilize the best version of a marketing resource without dividing your budget among many marketing tools.

Keeping track of and evaluating data has helped me serve my business and my client businesses better, also allowing me to acquire more customers with our reasonable prices!

Enhanced Content Marketing

Marketing is a swarm of resources, and I can’t deny how extensive the methods are. However, the bottom line is that everything in marketing is related to content. Whether it’s a static image, live stream video, or even a billboard – it’s the content that reaches customers! Data analytics help you understand which content is more effective and helps you improve your content marketing strategies to hit the consumers right where it hurts – yes, I mean their pain points!

The Challenge Of Data Privacy

Data is wonderful, but it doesn’t come without its own challenges. Apart from the challenge of finding the right data and using it for the right marketing aspects – data privacy has been a looming obstacle for marketers from the beginning.

Third-party cookies have been the go-to data collection method for most marketing and advertising campaigns. However, the lack of transparency and a large number of unsafe websites have made consumers reluctant to accept cookies. The shift to using first and second-party data more often is increasing, but despite improved transparency and privacy, gathering these data can be more difficult than hoping users accept cookies.

There are many other modes of data collection, for example, how Google records your keyword searches, matches search intents, and so on. However, consumers aren’t always willing to share all their data, and businesses constantly struggle to be compliant with the constantly changing data privacy measures. But I believe it’s worth it to keep up with these measures because the benefits of using data outweigh the burden of keeping in check with the turmoils of data privacy.

Data Is The Future – Forever

Data Is the Future - Forever

Data in marketing is a crucial aspect of how marketers can improve their marketing plans and strategies, keeping them ahead of the competition. The need to shift to data-oriented marketing is imminent as everybody is going to make use of the information available to them rather than lose out by making assumptions or following outdated strategies that no longer apply in the evolving data-driven world.
